Sen. Kylís leadership may have thwarted efforts to ratify the new Start Treaty. This Treaty was signed by both President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in April of 2010. According to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank on Capitol Hill, the treaty is flawed because it contains inadequate verification, constrains American ability to develop and deploy missile defenses, and allows Russia and China to modernize while forbidding America from constructing new nuclear warheads.
As a country we need to remain strong militarily with modern capability to defend ourselves against any threat be it from either a nation state or non nation state actor. President Reagan called this Peace through Strength. Arms control efforts should be in the national interest of the United States and our allies, not just an effort to build international political goodwill. It is long overdue that all Federal officials recognize that a strong and comprehensive missile defense system is in our national interest. Thank you Senator Kyl for recognizing this and standing up for all Americans!
Statement on the passage of the New Start Treaty
No major treaty has ever been ratified by a lame duck session of the Senate until today. It is unprecedented procedurally. And while my compliments go to President Obama and Senator Lugar who I know worked hard for the passage of this treaty, I remain concerned that the New START Treaty could hamper American ability to pursue, construct, and implement a comprehensive missile defense system. It is my hope that the outcome of the November election will be remembered over the holiday break and will remind our leadership of the peopleís will.
